With technology continually evolving computer components provide ever faster processing speeds and larger storage capabilities. The downside of this evolution is that the amount of heat generated by these highbred components increases exponentially with their improved performance. This makes the task of keeping the temperature down to a workable level increasingly difficult.
Network downtime for any reason is usually a catastrophe for a company but when the failure is due to server room temperature there can be data loss or data recovery issues on top of the normal equipment repair and replacements costs. To avoid these issues an effective temperature monitoring system needs to be in place.
But It’s not enough though to just add a temperature monitoring system and hope for the best! The administrator needs to be aware of where hot spots are likely to occur, how the flow of air within the environment affects temperature and what the optimum operating temperature of the equipment is. The temperature should be monitored in a number of places to give a true picture of what’s really going on in the environment.
In addition they need to know how to best utilize the temperature data collected through the monitoring. Many companies install temperature monitoring equipment and then just use air conditioning to lower the temperature of the server room or IT environment but this isn’t always an efficient use of resources. If, for instance, a hot spot should occur right by the air intake on a server then a low room temperature may not be sufficient to safeguard the network and other corrective actions may need to be taken.
Once the collected data has been used to find the optimum operating environment for the equipment then the temperature monitoring system can be used to ensure that those conditions are maintained. Early warnings can be given if there is any variation from the optimal setting allowing administrators to take corrective action before inconvenient and potentially disastrous problems can occur.
